American Horror Story Season 2 – Asylum

American Horror Story Season 2 – Asylum

As the first season of American Horror Story ended which revolves around a Murder House, the second season (American Horror Story Season 2 – American Horror Story Asylum) has no connection to the first season but some cast returned for the show in a totally different character.

“The people that are coming back will be playing completely different characters, creatures, monsters, etc. …People who are coming back will be playing entirely new characters,” Ryan Murphy said.

Aside from the new characters, it was also set in a new location saying that the finale of season 1 is the end of the Harmon house and the second season will be in a new building.

“Just like this year, every season of this show will have a beginning, middle and end. [The second season] won’t be in L.A. It will obviously be in America, but in a completely different locale.”

Hence, the American Horror Story: Asylum was set in an insane institution. According to the creator of AHS, what made the second season creepier is that it didn’t involved ghosts but it is based on truth that happens and may happen in mental institutions.

Plot

Season two of AHS focuses on doctors, patients and nuns in Briarcliff Mental Institution in Massachusetts set in the year 1964. The institution is managed by Sister Jude (Jessica Lange) and Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe) and was founded by Monsignor Timothy Howard (Joseph Fiennes), primarily aiming to treat and house people who are mentally and criminally insane.

Patients are being treated by psychiatrist Dr. Oliver Thredson (Zachary Quinto) and scientist Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell). Some of the patients are a lesbian journalist named Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson), an accused serial killer named Kit Walker (Evan Peters), and also an alleged murderer named Grace Bertrand (Lizzie Brocheré).

Sister Jude had a dark past being a nightclub singer and had accidentally killed a young girl through a hit and run incident back in 1949. After that, she decided to become a nun where she was selected to run Briarcliff. Since she was bothered by her conscience, she later visited the family of the girl and she discovered that the girl survived with few broken bones. With that, she figured out that it was God’s plan for her to work in the asylum and destroy the evil.

Another nun is Sister Mary Eunice who is shy and innocent and who fears Sister Jude. During of the exorcism for one of their patients, she was possessed and she became cruel and willful.

Speaking of the evil people in the institution, it included Dr. Arden, a sadistic scientist and serial killer Dr. Thredson. Formerly a Nazi, Dr. Arden has different experiments like how he produced “Raspers” which is a result of putting together mutated patients. The Raspers are found lurking in the woods around the building and are being fed by dead patients.

Psychiatrist Dr. Thredson is tasked to evaluate Kit Walker, who claimed that his wife Alma (Britne Oldford) was abducted by aliens. Kit was arrested for murders but later on escape. It was also revealed that Dr. Thredson was the one who committed the murders and made sure that he will be assigned to Kit and Alma to cover up himself.

The doctor also tried to reform Lana Winters, a journalist who tried to expose the mistreatment in Briarcliff. Since she is a lesbian, she is in a relationship with Wendy (Clea Duvall). Lana later on discovered that Dr. Thredson killed Wendy after she asked him to contact her.

Thredson actually tried to help Winters escape the asylum when she requested him to do that. But she learned about his secrets and that he looks at her as her mother. She was the held prison as Thredson tried to turn her into his mother figure. He also raped her and then tried to kill her. But Winters managed to escape and then still ended up getting back to the institution. Later she discovered that she is pregnant with the baby of Thredson.

Since Kit believed that his wife is dead or is missing, he started an affair with Grace Bertrand, who has murdered her family because his father is sexually abusing her. Kit and Grace were seen having sex before Kit was arrested. Grace then abducted by aliens and was returned pregnant and ready to give birth.

Kit helped Grace and arranged with the Monsignor so they will be released together with their baby. When Kit returned home, he found his wife Alma with her own baby.

Sister Mary Eunice managed to remove Sister Jude from her position and she took over with the help of Dr. Arden. She then nursed Monsignor Howard back to health and even tried to perform exorcism to her which eventually failed. She sexually assaulted Howard and since Howard got tired of everything that is happening, he killed Mary Eunice by throwing her off the balcony from the third floor. Meanwhile, Dr. Arden cremated Mary Eunice since he is loyal to her before killing himself.

As for Lana, she was able to record a confession from Dr. Thredson about what is happening in the asylum. She later told him that she already turned over the record to the police. Upon knowing that, Dr. Thredson said that he is insane and because of that, he will not be convicted. He then said that Lana will be his last victim but Lana was able to get a gun from the drawer and shoot him in the head.

Since Lana successfully revealed the dark secrets of Briarcliff, the asylum was closed due to inhumane treatments and she also became a famous television investigative reporter.

In Lana’s revelation, she said that Monsignor Howard had suicide because she threatens to expose the negligence of Briarcliff. She also reported that Kit took Sister Jude after his wife Alma was brought into the asylum since she killed Grace. Sister Jude got dementia and she was brought to the woods by the children where she grew old and died. Kit was then abducted after he got sick with pancreatic cancer.

Meanwhile, Lana’s son, Johnny (Dylan McDermott) is seeking vengeance because she never loved him and even claimed that he died during birth. He showed up in her house and threatens to kill her to finish his father’s work and to make him proud. But Lana was able to convince Johnny that he is not like his father. She then takes a gun and shoots Johnny on the head.
